For LGBTQ youth, school can be a battleground. In fact, LGBTQ students are the most common targets of harassment at school. That harassment can reach its most fevered pitch in middle school. This makes middle school an important focus for behavioral change. Our school wants to ignite change by creating a GSA, Gender and Sexuality Alliance. The purpose of this club is to create a safe space for students who fall within the LGBTQ community and those that support it. If students don’t feel safe at school, they can’t learn. It’s that simple. This could be the one place students feel safe or the one place that keeps them coming back to school. My goal for this project is to be able to help fund our snacks at group meetings. Because one thing we do know, middle schoolers love snacks! A tradition I wish to start is to pass around our snack bowl, let each student grab a snack and say their rose/thorn for the week (one wonderful thing that happened to them and one not so wonderful thing). This connects our students and helps strengthens bonds. We then celebrate the rises and support the falls of our days together strengthening the human connection fostering empathy in our group members.
