This project will take the middle school science curriculum out of the textbook and put it directly into their hands as gardeners. Students will experience first hand the interconnectedness of resources in their world and how photosynthesis works by creating a rooftop garden that includes a compost station and a rain barrel, as well as raised vegetable gardens. Students will learn about the importance of micro-organisms in the soil and the importance of soil conservation by collecting their lunch food scraps in the green 55 gallon trash bin to be used in making compost. The blue trash container and hose faucet will be used to construct a rain barrel so students will be able to water their plants, because we are on the rooftop and there is no access to water. Moreover, students will learn the importance of water conservation. Because this is going to be a year long project, we anticipate working through all types of weather. The instant canopy is for our outdoor area, so that we can work through all types of Florida weather, from the hottest of days to the rainy days. In all, students will realize that growing healthy foods is actually healthy for them and the planet, since they will see how plants sequester carbon in their growth and their exchange with the soil and atmosphere. Thank you
