The Fifth Grade Team at Stanton Elementary would like to build our classroom library with picture books that will help our students build empathy. As part of our Social and Emotional Learning Competencies, one of our indicators is Social Awareness. Social Awareness means that our students will have the ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Purchasing a variety of picture books with diverse characters will help us facilitate conversations about topics that include race, ability, and social class. When students see themselves in a book, it is very powerful. They feel a sense of belonging. However, if students read a book that will offer them a look into someone else’s reality, this can build empathy and shine a light into an individual’s world that is different from theirs.
