I am a second-year teacher this year, and when I began reflecting on the needs of my students and my school I remembered how difficult it was to give students basic supplies such as notebooks, pencils, markers, etc. As a teacher of diverse learners, it becomes difficult to help my students learn visually without access to the materials needed to create those visuals. It is so important for me for my students and their families to not have to worry about having the basic tools necessary to reach their academic goals. The items on my list are supplies that can be used to enhance lesson plans and create opportunities for students to demonstrate their knowledge in creative ways. With these materials we can create volcanos in science class, we can draw diagrams and visual graphs in math class, we can create our own storybooks in English, and draw comics in history. For students with Autism, just having the opportunity to use art to reflect their knowledge can make all the difference, tackling a major obstacle to learning.
