I became the school librarian at a school that had not had a certified librarian in over five years. The physical condition, copyright age, and scope of the book collection had been neglected for quite some time. The yearly library budget barely provides enough funding for basic materials and supplies and leaves very little to do more than replace a portion of the lost and damaged books. Our current library book collection does not reflect the diversity of our school population and I would like all of our students to be able to see themselves in the books they are reading.
