We are located off campus and currently do not have easy access to a playground with equipment. It is imperative that these young children have an opportunity to use and stretch their gross motor skills. 4 year olds need to run, jump, climb, balance and play. Just this week one of my students asked, “Why do we only have bark at our park?” It broke my heart to tell this child from a low-income community that we “might get one someday,” knowing that we did not have the funds to make this a reality. My goal is to find a way to provide the physical outlet they need so that their minds and bodies can continue to develop and grow with the proper stimulation from outside play. I have been working very hard to provide rich play to learn experiences for all my students. I want to encourage healthy bodies and healthy lifestyles from an early age. Having access to playground climbing equipment will give an opportunity to build confidence, strength, and skills that are necessary for more complex physical activities as they grow. Offering a chance to explore and play on a playground also invites children to become risk takers and try things they haven’t yet mastered which fosters a growth mindset.
