Creating a culture of acceptance should be a part of every school's curriculum. Our students are growing up in a generation of change; a generation in which people of diverse races, cultures, abilities, etc. are more readily standing up for their right to be treated equitably. The time to teach acceptance is now. The sooner we introduce our students to the beautifully diverse world they live in, the better they will be at appreciating those they encounter who are different than themselves. By supporting this project with the purchase of one or more of the books on my list, you will help me to build a collection of inclusive texts in my classroom where children with disabilities are being instructed along with able-bodied peers. These books will be used to lead Social/Emotional lessons and to create supporting resources for students to independently engage with. Additionally, the success of this project will be shared with my colleagues at grade-level meetings and/or professional development sessions so they too may consider diversifying their instruction to include lessons on acceptance.
