Having ownership of high interest, accessible non fiction will help my students become critical, independent thinkers and spark their curiosity to further investigate current events. In a world where much of the information middle school students receive is through social media, these magazines have a fighting chance to compete for student focus outside of class! Scholastic "Scope" grabs their attention through sharp visuals, catchy graphics, and differentiated reading passages to entice even the most reticent reader and broaden his or her horizons. Having "Scope" in their hands will give students voice and choice, two components critical to engagement. We'll focus on specific articles in class, and students will have the opportunity to choose articles to engage with outside of class. This Scholastic magazine will be used to tackle reading, writing, speaking and listening goals for traditional students as well as English language learners.
