I am a first year teacher teaching a high-needs third grade class. As a result of the pandemic, budget cuts have been seen across the board and many classroom teachers are being asked to provide resources for their classrooms. I teach in a low-income neighborhood of Queens, New York. The children in my school have been detrimentally impacted by the covid-19 pandemic. Not only has their learning been affected, but so have their social and emotional well-being. Remote learning was not an enjoyable situation for most. Many children have developed severe anxieties regarding their every day lives with the pandemic looming at every corner as well as their returns to school — yet another inconsistency in their lives. The greatest obstacle for myself is funding. I want these children to have something to look forward to five days a week. I want their excitement for learning and socializing (from a distance) to be reignited. This bright and multi-functional classroom furniture will bring not only vibrancy to my classroom. It will also mitigate my students’ anxieties for returning to a socialized classroom setting which they have been long removed from over the previous year. They are anxious as a result of the extreme interruption of their every day routines. Their anxieties also stem from the climate of the world and entering a space which they believe to be potentially unsafe. These seating materials will be used to lessen the tension in the classroom, and invite the kids into a space which they can be excited for. My goal is to create a safe, comforting, and fun learning environment for the kids who I work with each and every day; but I can’t do this without your help.
