One of my central goals as a teacher is to help my students change from passive receivers of an eduction, to active learners. One of the most essential tools in creating such learners is literacy. I use independent reading in my classes, but our class novels are always read aloud by me or an audiobook because so many students lack the literacy skills to access more complex texts on their own. For my project, I want to provide students with a resource that gives them access to a more advanced classic text, through a medium and level that will help them to read independently with better results; the graphic novel version of To Kill a Mockingbird helps bridge this divide. By giving students a visual component to guide them through the story, students are more likely to remain engaged and to comprehend more of the novel without my constant guidance, thus preparing them to take a more active role in thinking critically about their own reading.
