My classroom is a self contained special needs orthopedic room. I have eight students currently all with some type of physical impairment. They range in mobility from independent walkers who require AFOs (ankle foot orthotics) to students who are unable to assist in their mobility at all. We use a variety of physical therapy equipment such as standers for weight bearing, gait trainers and gait belts. My students are functionally non-verbal and have different modes of communication and speech devices. They all receive either small group or individual speech therapy. Our main goal in my classroom is to push for as much independence as possible and to have fun while we do it! We have "fun Friday" where we focus on a recipe (either food or sensory) that goes along with the theme of the lessons we've been doing.
