One of the ways we are supporting students’ successes this year is through “Calm Down or Peace Corners”. This is an area in the classroom where students can go when they experience strong emotions that get in the way of their learning or in their relationships with peers and/or staff. In this area, students have the opportunity to focus on self-regulation with a variety of manipulatives that can assist the student in the calming down process so they can quickly return to their learning. Giving students this opportunity to settle their minds and bodies so they are ready to learn is invaluable. At the school, each classroom has a tub and items that have been donated. The challenge this year due to COVID-19 will be keeping these items sanitized so they can be available for ongoing use by students. My request through Donors Choose is to have one sanitizing bag for at least every 2 classrooms for a total of 15 bags. These bags with UV lights can easily, quickly, and thoroughly clean the manipulatives in the Calm Down Box so they are available for the next student. Now, more than ever, kids are experiencing anxiety and uncertainty at a higher rate and having the calm down boxes readily available will be a huge benefit in their process of self-regulation. Keeping kids safe and possibly decreasing the spread of a virus is also vitally important. In all ways, this will hopefully bring about "Peace of Mind".
