I am very lucky to be in a school with the space to set up a sensory room! While we have had the space for a while, we haven't had the materials and the tools to make the space functional for supporting the sensory needs of students. Not only do sensory rooms support visual, auditory, and tactile processing, but they also help develop motor coordination, increase concentration, and promote positive ways to de-escalate behaviors. Sensory rooms provide a safe space to calm down and self-regulate, which in turn improves focus, concentration, and class participation. While setting up a sensory room is expensive, it is so beneficial to students! Students who return from sensory rooms are often calmer and more focused, which can improve academic success and decrease challenging behaviors. As more students return to in person learning this fall, a sensory room would be a great addition to my school to assist in supporting the learning of not just my special education students, but all students!
