Pedometers serve as a huge motivator for students to get active in Health and Physical Education class. They serve as an educational tool that helps students understand energy balance, pacing, and motivates them to increase their level of physical activity. This is so important because exercise is beneficial in all aspects of life. In the classroom it improves their performance and grades. Exercise lifts their mood by releasing endorphins and relieves stress. I know a majority of my students have a lot going on in their personal lives, especially in today's society with all the racial injustice and COVID-19. They are learning how to cope and manage their stress levels and they are only able to come to school 2 days a week. On the 2 days I get to see them I want them to be able to come into my gym and leave all the worry and troubles at the door. Middle school students are at that age where they are adapting and learning about who they want to be. I want my students to come to class, grab their pedometer, and know they are going to have fun, work hard, and reap all the amazing benefits of exercise. At the end of class when they see how many steps they took it is like a little reward in itself to see how much they accomplished in only 45 minutes. I know I can use pedometers as a key player in a variety of learning activities to teach students concepts that align with the Health and Physical Education curriculum and standards of learning. My goal as a educator is to motivate my students to not only be active and healthy now, but for the rest of their life. These pedometers will help me do that.
