It is my first year of teaching and I have decided to create a classroom economy in my classroom. One of our second grade standards involves learning the mathematical value of money. However, I believe that so many other lessons, not just mathematical, can be learned from learning how to manage money. My students will learn about saving money, the consequences of not following rules, accepting those consequences, and keeping track of what they need to do to reach their goals. They are already practicing our math standards of counting by fives and tens, counting on from a number, adding and subtracting when making change, and learning the multitude of ways to add to certain dollar amounts on a daily basis. By being able to finally open our classroom, my students will start learning about the other facets of money and money management.
