Blocks are one of the foundational tools of any preschool program. Blocks help children develop and learn in all developmental domains. Watch children play with blocks and you will see students who are working on fine and gross motor skills, practicing problem solving, understanding spatial awareness, cooperating with peers to build a structure, practicing counting, and understanding how pieces fit together. This list could go on and on! When asked why she created unit blocks, Caroline Pratt said, "What I sought was something so flexible, so adaptable, that children could use it without guidance or control, I wanted to see them build a world; I wanted to see them re-create on their own level the life about them, in which they were too little to be participants, in which they were spectators." Blocks provide the best learning experience for kids. Not only can kids let their creativity shine but block play fosters development in all the learning domains from social emotional skills to gross motor skills; blocks help students grow.
