The most effective way to engage kids, preschoolers through upper elementary, is through books and stories. Even the toughest kids, who tell me over and over they don't like books, can't stop talking when I read them an exciting book about places and people they might not have an opportunity to experience in real life. Literacy based speech therapy is proven to have positive outcomes in both a child's oral language development and academic skills. Student's learn new vocabulary through colorful illustrations, grammar through repetitive story lines, social skills through engaging character narratives and how to retell their favorite stories to share with friends and family. I enjoy traveling the world and want to share my love of traveling with my students through the pages of a book. Although my students may never leave our city; I want them to know about foreign countries, famous landmarks, and ancient ruins. I want them to hear other languages, try new foods, and understand how children around the world live. I hope by using a diverse literacy curriculum, they understand how similarities and differences across cultures can bring us all together.
