We are starting a pollinator garden. We will use this garden in conjunction with our 2nd grade study of pollinators and pollination and its effect on our food chain. Our second graders are immersed in the study of pollination for 5 months of our school year and read, write and research specific pollinators and the plants they help. These gardening materials will be used in our new garden that will be located in our play yard. Living in New York City, most students do not have backyards so this is a unique opportunity for students to interact with nature in a loving and caring environment. Through this project we will be investigating not only pollination and gardening but also several endangered pollinator species and the importance of ecology and conservation. With the gardening gloves, tools, seeds and starter kits we will begin our garden! As part of this project we are also buying raised garden beds so that students with physical disabilities are able to experience the joy of gardening. After this past year, students will hopefully find gardening to be a soothing activity that calms the mind and body.
