Racial equity and inclusion are the heart and soul of my project. For too long, the picture books that I read to my students have not been mirrors or windows for them. In other words, they are unable to see themselves in these books (like a mirror) because the characters do not look like them. Nor do my current books give my students the opportunity to see into the lives of people who may not look, live, believe or act like them (like a window). I have been teaching elementary school for 20 years. In that time, the colors of the children's faces in my room has changed. However, the characters in high quality picture books have not. I am eager to remedy that with your help!
