In March when our school district closed because of the pandemic, my students at the time were not prepared for online learning. That was because I never taught using programs like Google Classroom. After 3 months of online teaching I decided if we ever got back to in person teaching, I would make sure my students were better prepared. Now, I am trying to blend both styles of teaching (computer based and paper based/hands-on), so my new students are better prepared in case we have to teach remotely again. Our school district being one of the poorest in the state has been trying to supply our students with one to one devices. They are currently only able to supply one to one devices for grades 5-12. Getting more devices for the district has been put on hold because of the COVID pandemic. This means that elementary will not be getting one to one devices for awhile. That is why I am asking for 6 Chromebooks for my classroom. We are currently sharing with the other 3 third grade classrooms 10 year old laptops that have missing parts and are sometime unreliable. I find it is easier and more convenient to teach using Google Classroom with Chromebooks than the laptops. The students in my class would use the Chromebooks to access Google Classroom and learn how to do some assignments online. Then if we happen to have to close our school again because of COVID or any other pandemic, I will feel more confident that my students will be able to navigate online learning. Also learning how to use a Chromebook will prepare them for the upper grades. I just want my students better prepared for the future.
