Evidence based research and personal experience have lead me to believe there's almost no student I can't reach and teach with a good book. Literacy is an important skill to have as students move from the K12 system into careers and college life. These books will allow me to plan lessons for my students that not only work on their speech and language goals but also, English language development, cognitive skills, reading abilities, and so much more. For example, my favorite book, Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast is used to target vocabulary building as it has a variety of words my students may not know, wherein they can use pictures and my reading as context to decipher meaning. Discussions about this book are wildly imaginative and pushes my students to think outside of the box, use longer and more complex sentences, develop rationale, etc.. This book also contains a lot of vocabulary that allows me to target speech sounds, for example if I have a kiddo working on his /p/ and /b/ sounds, they may be asked to tell what Lady Pancake is doing on the pages throughout the book. Books can serve as a vehicle for so many goals and skills which is why this project is focused around building my library. I am a brand new speech therapist and have a select amount of books and my therapy would be immensely impacted by your generous choice to fund this project.
