These books will continue to enhance our expanding knowledge of various cultures while allowing my students to see characters who look like them at the same time. Literature engages youth in conversations about culture. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. I am hoping to spark conversations that need to be had in classrooms, especially in urban districts like ours. Diverse literature sends the message that everyone is welcome in our class community. It serves as mirrors where children see a reflection of themselves but also as windows where they see people that are different from them.
