All of the materials I have requested will be directly impacting my students directly. Our school library is severely out of date and in poor condition. Allowing our students to have access to print materials are so important! Many of our students do not have access to books or magazines at home. Many have only read books from our school's library, so it's imperative that these children have reading materials available to them to have both in school and at home.
Once lending materials is deemed safe again, I plan on establishing our book lending program and making it more robust. Our collection is not only extremely old, but it is not diverse. 95% of our students are African American and it's so important that our students see representations of themselves in the books they read. Most of the books w have in our collection feature white children and white characters. Our students have a hard time connecting to those books and themes within the stories because they do not see other African Americans depicted. I plan on changing that. I would love if a donor would assist me in my goal of creating a more diverse collection in our library.
