The drums, small percussion, and ambient sound instruments will be used in a counselor led group drumming intervention to build the social emotional behavior skills of our students so that they may be successful inside and outside of the classroom. Drumming groups are an evidence-based rhythmic whole-child centered group activity that is used to build and strengthen skills that support emotion management, healthy self-expression, focus, and listening. By participating in the group, students will release stress, energize and regulate themselves, and have relational experiences within the small group that will help to establish inclusivity and community among students. Typical group drumming session activities will include: the whole group playing an ongoing rhythmic pattern to increase student self-regulation, spoken and rhythmic drumming of self-affirmations to encourage positive behavior and healthy self-expression, and the echoing back of improvised student created rhythms by other members to support focus and listening skills among students.
