Our middle school band program is growing in spite of already respectable numbers. We're ready to branch out into new musical directions that aren't currently being offered. Jazz band is one middle school level ensemble that has been a standard offering in all programs around the nation. One of the most crucial parts of a jazz band is a bass with an amp. You literally can't have a school jazz band without one. Jazz music is the one true American art form, and to not offer it to our students is doing them quite the disservice. While our students could currently begin working on music from the jazz idiom and learn about its unique styles and improvisational skills, they would not be able to effectively perform for an audience and express their creativity with out a full rhythm section. Being able to provide a complete performance to an appreciative audience would give my students a true sense of accomplishment in addition to providing them with a solid education of jazz music.
