Kindergarteners love listening to and interacting with stories read aloud. Listening to a variety of literature helps young students develop language skills to become amazing readers and writers as their schooling continues. In order to further build these skills, it is important for students to be able to make connections with the text they are reading. For this project, I am requesting a variety of children’s books featuring diverse characters and inclusive themes, so that all is the students in my classroom can see themselves and their friends represented in literature! Everyone deserves to see themselves as the heroes of a story, no matter their gender, race, ability, socioeconomic status, or family structure. Diverse representation in literature benefits all students in a classroom. It not only helps students connect to characters, but it also helps students learn about people who are different than themselves. The picture books in this project will help me ensure that my students feel like they are valued and loved, and know that they play a critical role in both our classroom and our community.
