After nearly a year away from their classrooms, teachers, and friends my students that want to return to in person learning will be returning to school beginning March 1, 2021. Our district has chosen the hybrid model. Students will be split into pods that attend school for two days per week. When they are not in school buildings, they will be learning remotely. As a parent I'm certain that making the decision to participate in person was an excruciating decision for both the parents and students. In an effort to relieve some of the pressure associated with this decision I want to provide a safe, comfortable, functioning learning environment. The CDC requires that all individuals above the age of 2 wear a face mask in public settings. Students understand that they must wear mask during in-person learning to protect themselves as well as others. The mask must cover the mouth and nose and fit snug. As an adult the snug fit can be extremely uncomfortable for me. Now students will be required to wear the mask for the entire 6 hour school day. Providing students with 3D mask brackets will allow them more space to breathe, prevent their glasses from fogging up, and are more audible. Although there have not been enough studies to prove that too much screen time leads to permanent vision damage trust me it's on the horizon. After six hours of instruction, professional developments, and staff meetings my eyes are out to lunch. Providing students with the option to wear blue light glasses or place a blue light screen protector over their laptops will help to enhance focus and reduce eye strain.
