Many of my students are English Language Learners. One of the best ways for children to learn language is to give them many opportunities to read. The more they read, the more language they learn. The challenge is to provide high interest books that build vocabulary, reflect various stages of language and reading development, while being culturally relevant to the students. The book list for this project includes books for rich read aloud discussions, multilevel books for independent reading, and series of books which allow students to follow a character through different experiences. Many of these books reflect our classroom diversity. They are selected with the intent to celebrate our uniqueness while also finding themes that tie us together. When my students go the classroom library they need to have choices that reflect who they are as individuals and where they are at as learners.
