As we approach the start of in-person learning, I am looking to provide my students with desk activities that can be done from their seat with minimal sharing. The products I have selected are engaging so the students are still focusing on their learning but without the risk of sharing germs. Whiteboards are integral in my math and ELA lessons. The whiteboards allow each student to participate in answering questions from their seat (rather than the carpet as we normally would do), and allows me to see the answers and document, quickly, who has 'got it' and who needs more help. The students can use these white boards to also work on their cursive writing. Being able to quickly erase and try again saves paper and allows the student to practice over and over again. The math and reading hands-on activities are designed to be completed at the students desk, with minimal interaction with others. The activities I have chosen will allow my students to continue to re-enforce topics and material we have completed in class, therefore further cementing their learning. As we learn about a topic, say place value, the students can use these activity boxes to practice at their seats. It also allows me to use these activities in small groups to further work with students who are struggling in that area. The idea is that the students be able to continue practicing the skills we are learning without doing workbooks and copy sheets. The idea of hands-on learning is integral to retaining the information that is taught. As a new unit, these items are vital in creating a love for learning atmosphere in my classroom. I want my students to be excited about learning and about the many awesome desk activities.
