My amazing 2nd-grade students are doing their best to learn while at home during distance learning right now. Recently, our district board announced that we would remain in distance learning through the rest of the year. Right now, we are struggling to make efficient use of our limited time together - tech troubleshooting for students, my slow computer struggling with the workload, and how inefficient teaching some concepts can be with a mouse and keyboard all take away instructional time. I want to create better and more effective lessons and resources for my students to learn from and use for reviewing concepts from class. In conversations, several of my colleagues have mentioned that touchscreens have been a really effective way for them to teach their classes.
This project will provide my students with additional ways to see and review important concepts that we are learning in class - from proper letter and word writing to math concepts, to having a mobile camera to explore real-life connections to our class topics. A powerful touchscreen tablet will help me to record videos where I can model techniques that students can review at any time. This will help create more equitable access to education for all of my students - sometimes the quietest time in their house isn't during class - it's later in the evening. This will also reduce the strain on families who are already working to balance their lives by enabling students to practice the responsibility that many of them have shown that they have acquired during this time by reviewing and learning the concepts on their own! In addition, I will be able to use the tablet's camera to "take" my students on "field trips" to apply their classroom knowledge to real-life contexts, like the park.
