A "Soft Start" is a morning routine in the classroom that incorporates student choice and eases them into their day through their natural curiosity, creativity and preferences. Soft start utilizes materials with which students can build, create, and investigate. In the past, I have used "morning work," consisting of a daily practice worksheet, that left many kids feeling behind, before their day had even begun. This year I would like to use a soft start as our morning transition time. Due to COVID-19, our school will have staggered arrival and dismissal times. That means that some students have an extended period of time when they will need to be in the classroom before any instruction can begin. COVID-19 also creates the unique challenge of items needing to be disinfected between students and students not being able to share one big bin of something. This means my classroom will need more items divided into smaller packages that can easily be washed or quarantined between users. By supporting this project, you provide a fun, non-stressful start to a child's morning at school. In a chaotic time, every child deserves a calm start to their day. This project will allow enough materials for the students in my class to select a few different items each week With these items, each student will be able to have choice and voice in what they work with. "Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood."-Fred Rogers
