This year's group of kids are readers. You can catch them reading every chance they get. They love when I read to them and love when I give them time to read independently. I have read Wonder out loud every year for the past 5 years. Every year the students fall in love with this story. They connect to it as the main character is starting 5th grade in a public school for the first time. The message that Wonder portrays is to always choose to be kind and be accepting even if it's not always the easiest path. Having a class set of Wonder will provide a meaningful text to help teach our literature standards. It can be challenging to find stories or texts that students can connect to and find interesting. Wonder does that and more. It creates class conversations where students are able to express their opinions and feelings openly. It makes them stop and think about how they treat others and to not be afraid of someone who is different. I love reading this story to the class, but it is hard to create lessons based on the book when I only have one copy. Having their own copy to refer back to and use with their daily work will make the lessons more effective. My students have already shown a love for reading, and this project will not only further their love, but also gain a better understanding of literature comprehension.
