These materials will help students explore a variety of books and see themselves represented in print. The furniture and office materials will help my students be comfortable as they dive into reading books and complete projects connected to topics in real life. The craft supplies allow students to demonstrate their learning in creative ways and for authentic audiences such as elementary students in our district and other community partners. Students can take supplies home as needed to complete projects without worrying about how to buy them. An example of one unit is reading a book by Jason Reynolds about gang violence and then researching a related social issue (gun control, gang involvement, grief, etc) to learn the impact it has on society as well as discuss possible solutions to the underlying problems.
