Most of my kindergartners from Texas come from a low social-economic status and do not have extra resources at home to aid in their academic success, but you would never guess! Each day they come in with the biggest smiles and most unexpected questions. Every day my students come in eager to learn. Some days they want to know how to make slime, some days they want to ask me all about a new word they heard, and some days they just want to know how to handle a bad day. My students give me the best of themselves every day; they are excited to come to school and share their curiosity. My students, who come from a variety of backgrounds, love to work collectively and teach each other. They have the biggest hearts and get so excited when we get to share our successes with one another. The use of hands on manipulatives is a daily activity in my classroom. It is used during both math and reading as our school has purchased learning programs for both subject areas. However, neither of the programs allow for tactile exploration which I feel will make a huge difference. The use of tactile materials will allow my students the opportunities to manipulate letters and sounds and begin to form connections will words. They will be able to explore and manipulate numbers when counting. These experiences will guide the building of a solid academic foundation that will potentially propel them forward in their education careers. As a class we focus on giving our best at all we do. Allowing these experiences will help them achieve their goals.
