I work as a special education occupational therapist in a low income district. Many of our families cannot afford to purchase additional supports designed to help with decreasing anxiety, increasing focus and attention. These animals will assist my students with self-regulation skills. These weighted animals will help my students with Autism and ADHD relax and remain calm so they can be better able to pay attention and learn. During this uncertain time of online learning, many special education students are struggling to pay attention. They, and we as educators, miss the hands on approach that is critical with our special needs students. Teaching my students and their families to use these animals as a way to calm down or relax by laying them across their laps, hugging them, or fidgeting with their ears will help them be more independent with learning how to self-regulate and be focused for learning.
