This year is unique in that students will be learning in a hybrid and online distance learning model because of covid-19. This project is a collaboration between two middle schools in the South Washington County School District- Cottage Grove Middle School and Lake Middle School. The students will be in 7th and 8th grades taking a STEM class focused on investigating problems with bird feeding, weather, location, food, migration, species distributions, and conservation. Students will plan and develop, carry out investigations, and present solutions. Students will be connected across schools, at home, and in class. We plan to build bird feeder/weather study posts in different locations. The brackets with screws and cable ties will hold bird feeders, hummingbird feeders, and weather-monitoring gear in place. Additionally, we will place game cameras in a position to capture photographs of the birds that come to the feeders. We will record observations of birds, weather-data, and use the binoculars to obtain manual smartphone photographs and to observe bird behaviors. The clear plastic rulers will be placed on the feeder to help with bird identification by size and shape. Students will then attempt to address any problems with bird/weather data and address these problems by designing solutions and presenting ideas. Students will communicate observations and data analysis across grade levels and schools.
