Successful readers are allowed to choose what they want to read, and I try to provide books across all genres to give them as much selection as possible. Because of this book diversity, my book stash is growing, and I am sorely in need of extra shelving, which is why I have chosen to ask for two bookcases. My English classroom is filled with creative student projects and artwork showcasing books and poems they have read, as well as vocabulary they have learned. Students' own-choice books are where this creativity begins. Watching them fuss over new books as they arrive is rewarding. And even more rewarding is watching a struggling reader spend time looking at all the books on the shelf with the express purpose of finding a book they want to read.
