Frederick Douglass once wrote about his experiences as a young slave learning to read. When his master became enraged by this act, he realized that literacy was his pathway from slavery to freedom. The same is true today. Being able to read and write opens up possibilities restricted only by one's own limitations. My project will be set up in the literacy room, and students will be able to access more books than just what is in their classroom. It is my hope that they will enjoy reading because these books are engaging. Additionally, I have requested "high interest, low readability" books for those who struggle with reading but want to read texts with grade-appropriate content. In this way, I hope the school's students will be excited about reading!
