Students will read one lesson/chapter every two weeks and complete the anti-racist activity at the end of the chapter. My goal is to foster a deeper sense of community in my classroom and encourage inclusive discussion about issues of race, as well as gender identity and identity in general. This book is so fabulous. It is beautiful and engaging. The reading selections are short, inclusive, and ask students to self-reflect about their own identity and the society in which we live. My goal is to foster a deeper sense of community in my classroom and encourage inclusive discussion about issues of race, as well as gender identity and identity in general. Already in class, students have created identity maps about themselves and are discussing their identities with each other using inclusive vocabulary. As we begin reading novels such as Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Laramie Project, and Catcher in the Rye, I hope students will feel safe to discuss issues in those novels such as power dynamics, mental health, race and ethnicity, gender and sexual identity. When my Juniors are finished with the book, my freshmen will also use the book.
