Since returning to school after over a year of virtual learning, many of my students have lost their ability to read for sustained periods of time. They have forgotten what it is like to enjoy a good book. I want them to become reengaged in learning. The Midwife's Apprentice is a Newberry medal winner written by Karen Cushman--beloved since it's publication in 1996. The novel tells the story of a Brat, "an unwashed, undernourished, unloved, and unlovely" medieval orphan whose life is transformed when she becomes the midwife's apprentice--a person with a name and a place in the world. The students will read the novel using a Reader's Road Map to help them engage with text, literary elements, and plot structure. The culminating choice projects will allow students to research medieval life and midwifery. Primary and secondary sources will be explored. So many important standards will be taught under the auspices of reading an award winning novel!
