I work with 3 and 4 year old special needs children from various social economic backgrounds. Many of them are also English Language Learners, and this is their first experience in a formal school environment. Typically developing students often learn by observing. Special needs learners need a multi-sensory approach to learning and require concrete objects they can touch and feel. The manipulative materials that were selected will be used for teaching letter sounds, counting, sorting, and language skills. The "toy" objects that were selected will be used to teach positional terms by allowing the students to physically place the "toy" in the location the teacher states. These items will also help build their expressive language skills as they learn to use their words to describe the object they are holding. The books requested will be the ones I will read to them virtually. They will have their own copy to look at and hold. The Play-Doh will be used to develop fine motor skills as well as to help them form letters, shapes, and numerals. The pattern blocks and building materials will help build their fine motor/processing and cognitive skills. The dry erase and magnetic boards with letters will help them develop their fine motor skills in a " fun" way as well as to teach letter recognition. Although I will be teaching virtually, my students will not just be sitting passively looking at a screen as each one will be actively involved. All of the materials requested will develop and help build my little ones' expressive and receptive language skills. Children are active learners and need hands-on learning materials in order to learn.
