Primary school age children have an exceptional ability to tell and create stories, however, many of our youngest students struggle with how to write these stories down on paper. I am requesting supplies to create a dedicated time in our schedule, allowing students to explore the writing process and create stories of their own. Our writer's workshop will begin with daily mini-lessons. Students will keep class notes, graphic organizers, reference materials, etc., in a binder. As students begin to write their own work, journals, loose leaf writing paper, pencils and erasers, will be accessible to all students. In my experience, editing and rewriting is often the most difficult part of the writing process for second grade students. For that reason, highlighters, red pens, and post it notes, will be used to help students mark their rough drafts with the help of the teacher before writing a final copy of their work. It is also my goal that the students will have a time set aside each week to be able to share their completed work with the class. This will help students to take pride in their work, build their ability to speak in front of their peers, and to gain confidence in the writing process as a whole. Sadly, many of these basic skills have been lost through the pandemic and virtual learning over the last year. It is my hope that later in the 2021-2022 school year, students will be able to compile their best work to create a class book, where each student would be represented. I am confident that the access to these needed supplies will greatly benefit my incoming 2nd grade class and give them an opportunity to become better writers and illustrators! Thank you for taking the time to consider this project.
