“Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are.” ― Mason Cooley Distance learning has brought our classrooms fully online and has introduced new challenges for our students. Students are currently expected to download books online if they are not able to purchased their own. This can be a very difficult task for our student with disabilities, which makes up 33% out of classes. Some students love the feeling of a book in their hands and enjoy turning the pages as they get lost in a new world. All students should be treated with love and care, and have the opportunities to read. My co-teacher and I have been purchasing books online and having them shipped directly to the student's homes. We would like to take this one step further and create a mobile library. Students will be able to select a book from our library and have it delivered directly to their mailbox by their teacher. Once they finish the book, they can request a new one. All books have been chosen with all students in mind, books they would enjoy reading no matter their reading level. Students will be able to choose a book, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. We cannot allow distance learning to increase the divide in our socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Our kids deserve better!
