My goal as an English teacher is to encourage my students to become lifelong readers. These books will help to achieve this goal by offering my students new, high-interest books that are currently not accessible to them. Our small district does not have a very large library, and my classroom library has a limited number of middle grade and young adult books. I like to teach mostly book club and choice reading units so that my students are always able to read something that interests them. Without a wide selection of current, age-appropriate books, it can be difficult to do this. Before I started teaching in this district, there were no library books in my classroom. The only reading books were ancient text sets from the cannon that did not appeal to my young readers. With the help of generous donors, I am looking to open my students up to a world of wonderful and impactful books that feature all kinds of backgrounds and perspectives. With these diverse books, I will be able to offer more choice reading options for students that give them windows into other people's experiences in the world. Now, more than ever, it is important for my students to be exposed to as many different viewpoints and experiences as possible to help them understand the world outside of our small town. When my students were given diverse books in the past, they happily read them and engaged in thoughtful conversations with me and their peers about what they learned. I want to continue having these wonderful teachable moments by offering even more diverse books for them to enjoy.
