Observations are one of the major methods I use to formatively assess my students and their mastery of the content. It also enables me to gauge how they are feeling and their classroom engagement. However, due to the pandemic and having to teach virtually, students have been reduced to a 1.5 inch square tile on my school-issued laptop screen, making it difficult to not only assess but to read their facial and body language. A secondary monitor will allow me to address the social emotional needs of each student and more efficiently run synchronous learning activities. With a larger display, I will be able to conduct fun whiteboard review activities where students display their responses on their screen and I am able to assess for mastery. It will also help me scan my classroom for active participation and signs of confusion and/or anxiety as my special education co-teacher teaches the lesson. Lastly, it will assist in the facilitation of circles that build classroom community and focus on students' individuality and their emotional needs.
