My students will soon be returning for face to face learning. Our district has strict guidelines for keeping kids safe during the Covid-19 pandemic. We are to limit the number of hands-on manipulatives that children can share. Therefore, I am requesting geometry shapes and unifix cubes in bulk quantities so all of my students will have the opportunity to use hands-on material. Because my students are English language learners and economically disadvantaged they are considered "at-risk;" so It is crucial that they are allowed to learn in a variety of ways. Hands-on learning does not just mean physically holding something. Hands-on learning means that students are not expected to sit in a chair; they are actually actively engaging all 5 of their senses as they explore and learn. Integrating mathematics and literacy allows students to develop an understanding of the place of mathematics in their world. Therefore, I am also requesting bilingual math readers that students can use in small groups. The books will be "quarantined" for 3 days after one group has read the book and then rotated to the other groups. Please help me make this very difficult school year a better place for children to learn.
