The recorder is the best teaching aid I know for third graders to start thinking about music reading in a more complex manner. They connect their early reading skills such as speaking and clapping their rhythms, to applying the fingerings to play those rhythms, then to adding the pitch and being able to sing the pitches in those rhythms. By the end of the school year, my 3rd graders are singing, playing, improvising, creating, and more excited than anyone I know to perform their special pieces in the concerts! This year we may miss all the experiences of getting in front of an audience, overcoming stage fright, relying on peers for confidence in a public performance, gaining the pride in a job well done, we may miss all that, but my students will own an instrument that they can call theirs, and they will know that one day that performance will come! I look forward to this 'virtual' new year, and all the good things that will come of it!
