Gel boards and writing styluses provide tactile, responsive surfaces for writing and promote dexterity and the development of fine motor skills. Students can write and erase on the gel board with the stylus like a traditional dry erase board but without markers that can dry out or the need for an additional eraser. Writing surfaces other than paper are helpful in establishing visual and tactile pathways for struggling learners, to enhance their memory and learning of written language. Reading affects writing, and writing affects reading. Therefore, materials that support students as they learn to form letters, make connections between written letters and sounds, and learn to encode the sounds that they hear will improve both of these areas. Because of COVID-19, students are not allowed to share materials. In the interest of sanitation, it will be helpful for students to have one gel board for in-person instruction and one gel board at home for virtual instruction. The hard surface of the gel board and the stylus are easily cleaned to maintain safe materials for student use.
