Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs proposes that human needs can be organized into a hierarchy, from the most basic physical needs, such as food & water to abstract concepts, such as self-fulfillment. He proposes that when a lower need is met, the next need on the hierarchy can become our focus of attention. It is difficult to focus on learning when one is hungry, thirsty, feels unsafe and unloved, or self-conscious because of body odor, or dirty stinky clothes. Good hygiene helps people feel better about themselves, giving them a more positive sense of self-worth. Having basic needs met can help build a positive self-image which can result in the ability to focus more attention on learning, building positive relationships, and planning for one's future.
