Our project request will allow for students to use building bricks, gears and Squigztm, and design and build engineering centers to choose and engage in building activities that support their learning of engineering principles. This will provide student-directed opportunities to explore, ask, and answer questions about how things work which are critical thinking skills needed for the future. With these new materials, students will choose a variety of building materials to engage in the discovery and learning of engineering principles. Students use materials to accomplish a goal in a student-directed, teacher-facilitated manner. Engineering goals in my classroom include: How can I build a tower as tall as me? How do use gears to make a wheel turn vertically or horizontally? How can I work with a friend to build a long bridge over water? What materials can be connected in new ways? This develops communication, teamwork, math, science as well as promoting an early interest in engineering skills!
